Teaching strategies contribute an important role to assist students’ learning. The teaching strategies must be relevant with the students and condition of the class. One of them is by using the cooperative learning strategy. Cooperative learning gives the students opportunities to interact with each other and work together to maximize their own learning. One of the techniques in cooperative learning is Think-Pair-Share (TPS).
This study used an experimental research design and was conducted in conducted at first grade of SMK Bina Bangsa Dampit. The population of this research is all the first grade students of SMK Bina Bangsa Dampit. There are 14 classes in the first grade. The total numbers of the first grade students are 550 students. The samples were recommended by the English teacher which included: PB 1 and PB 2, where PB 1 class was experimental group and PB 2 class was control group. The data of this study were taken through test in form of pre-test and post-test. The calculation of the study was done using SPSS 20 version.
Based on the data analysis, the research finding shows that Think-pair-share strategy provided a positive significant on students’ speaking skill. The mean score of students’ speaking test in the experimental group based on the result of Independent Sample t-test of Post-test was 69.57. Meanwhile, the mean score of students’ speaking test in the control group was 56.39. The t score according to the result of independent sample t-test of post-test was 8.47. It indicated that the students who were taught by using Think-pair-share strategy had better achievement than the students who were taught by using conventional one.
Teacher has important role in developing the students’ ability in speaking. Therefore, choosing an appropriate strategy is highly suggested. Collaborative strategy is seen to be effective in learning speaking. This study provided some information related to Collaborative strategy.
