The Effectiveness Of Using Cooking Mama Game Towards Student`s Speaking Skill
Cooking Mama game is a kind of electronic games that shows the process to make a recipe of foods from all the words. It provides the pictures of food, ingredients and material needed, steps for making foods, and the explanation of food with sound. The objective of this research is to find out whether there is a significant difference of the speaking skill between the second grade students SMK Bina Bangsa Dampit who are taught by using Cooking Mama game and those who are taught by using conventional one. The researcher employed quasi-experimental research design.
The participants involved in this study were second grade students of SMK Bina Bangsa Dampit. The population of this study was all the second grade students of SMK Bina Bangsa Dampit which consisted of 15 classes with a total of 476 students. The samples were recommended by the English teacher where Banking 4 class with 37 students as an experimental group and Banking 2 class with 36 students as a control group. The data were obtained through oral tests, consisted of pre-test and post-test. The calculation was done using SPSS 22.00 program.
The findings shows that the students who were taught by using Cooking Mama game as medium to teaching had better achievement than the students who were taught by using conventinal one. It can be seen from the result of t-test for post-test was 71.216. The t score was 4.088 which is had the significant value more than 0.05. It means that H0 (null hypothesis) is rejected and Ha (alternative hypothesis) is accepted. It can be concluded that using cooking game as a medium to teaching provides positive significant effect in students’ speaking skill.
Selecting an appropriate media in teaching is highly recommended for teachers who have important role in developing students’ speaking skill. Therefore, this research suggests that Cooking Mama game is an effective medium that can be used by teacher to teaching English speaking.
