The Effect Story Pyramid Techiques Towards Students` Reading Comprehension Of Narrative Text
Mikulecky and Jeffries (1986) said that reading is an activity in which someone reads a text and catches the meaning of the text, reading helps you learn in the new language, vocabulary and makes you more comfortable with the language. It can be concluded that reading is not only a source of information and pleasurable activity but also a means of consolidating and extending student`s knowledge of the language. However, reading comprehension ability is becoming very important, but in the act, many students are having difficulty in comprehending. This is a condition where the importance of reading strategies comes in so as to facilitate the reading process and give students a clear sense of what they are reading. Thus, teachers need to make creative and interesting techniques to attract students' attention in reading that can be used to improve students’ comprehension. The technique is the Story Pyramid technique. The story pyramid is one of the techniques of graphic organizers that the researcher uses to teach reading comprehension.
The design of this study is an experimental by taking the sample 60 students from 120 students of population which divided into two classes 30 students for experimental class and 30 students for control class. Before giving the treatment, the researcher gave pre-test. Then the researcher taught in experimental class with Story Pyramid technique, and in control class with Skimming strategy. After two meetings, the researcher gave the post-test to both classes. The scores of pre-test and post-test were collected from twenty-five multiple-choice questions, after it was analyzed by using t-test.
Based on the analysis, this study led into the conclusion that using Story Pyramid technique was effective towards students` reading comprehension of narrative text at Junior High School at eighth grades. The student’s pre-test mean score in experimental class was 78 while the post-test mean score was 90. In contrary, the student’s pre-test mean score in control class was 74 and the post- test score was 82. In the t-test result, significant is < 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05). It means that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected.
Therefore, based on the result of this research, it can be concluded that the use of Story Pyramid technique has positive effect in teaching reading comprehension at the eighth-grade students.
