An Analysis The Figurative Language Divide Album Of Ed Sheerans Lyrics
A song is one of the best forms of entertainments to enjoy. The languages or words in the song are used in a specific way, so it becomes different from the ordinary language. It is interesting because it is usually written using beautiful and nice words. Every composer tends to use variety of figurative language on the song, so that, it becomes interesting issue to analyze kinds of figurative language, the meaning of figurative language, the functions of figurative language and the messages that contained in the song lyrics on “Divide” Album of Ed Sheeran‟s song Lyrics.
The study employed a descriptive qualitative design. The subject of this study was Ed Sheeran‟s song in the album “Divide”. The object of this research was figurative language in the Ed Sheeran‟s song lyrics. The researcher only chose and analyzed eight songs from one album which known as the 8 top songs based on the most frequent searched songs by listeners on https://amp.insider.com/ed sheeran-top-songs-ranked. The songs include: 1) Eraser, 2) Castle On The Hill, 3) Dive, 4) Perfect, 5) Happier, 6) Heart Don‟t Break Around Here, 7) What Do I Know, 8) Supermarket Flowers. In analyzing the data, the researcher used data analysis framework suggested by Miles and Huberman (1994) which include: data reduction, data display, and data conclusion drawing and verification
The findings of this study suggest that there are ten types of figurative language used on Ed Sheeran‟ top eight songs in the album “Divide” which include: Oxymoron, Irony, hyperbole, Personification, Repetition, Anaphora, Metaphor, Paradox, Simile, and Alliteration. The most dominant figurative language used on those top eight songs is hyperbole by 42% and followed by personification by 12.5%, repetition 12.5% and metaphor by 12.5%. The findings of this study suggest that on those eight songs, which mainly talk about the song composer personal experience, the song composer likes to attribute human characteristic to non-human being or representing an abstract quality into human form.
