The Effectiveness Of Vocabulary Notebook In Improving Students Vocabulary Mastery At Smpn 6 Singosari
In learning languages, vocabulary mastery plays a crucial part in one‟s foreign language learning and language proficiency includes reading, listening, speaking and writing. The importance of vocabulary mastery is closely related to the level of quality of a person's skills in communicating with people. Unfortunately, many language learners are not fully aware of this, and even tend to ignore it. So that, it is not surprising that many students experience many difficulties in mastering vocabulary, even for the easy vocabularies that they find every day. To address this, teachers as educators need to realize this shortcoming and start trying seriously to help their students get out of these difficulties by considering the most appropriate media in teaching them. The purpose of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of vocabulary notebook in improving students‟ vocabulary mastery.
This study used quasi experimental research design. The quasi experimental design was used since the two existing class namely experimental class and control class were chosen as the subject without being randomized. The study was conducted at SMPN6 Singosari of Malang in the academic year of 2020/2021. The total samples of the two classes were 64 students, and each class consisted of 32 students. The treatment was given to each class two times. It was given through online meetings using google classroom application and whatsapp group. For the experimental class, it was taught using vocabulary notebook media, while the control class it was taught using picture media. The data of this study were taken through the test result on pre- test and post-test. Then the data were calculated using SPSS 22 Version.
Through the analysis on independent sample t-test, it was found that vocabulary notebook did not provide a positive significant effect on the students‟ vocabulary mastery at the eighth graders of SMPN6 Singosari of Malang. The t value was -.231, and the p (2-tiled) was .818 (p < .05). So, it can be concluded H0 could not be rejected and H1 could not be confirmed. Based on the result of post-test in both classes it was found that the mean score of vocabulary test on experimental class through independents sample t – test was 76.00, on control class was 76.38. It means that the implementation of vocabulary notebook as teaching media could not give positive significant effect on the eight grade students‟ vocabulary mastery in SMPN 6 Singosari.
There are two possible reason for this. The first, the research was done online, so the researcher could not implement and monitor the teaching and learning process using vocabulary notebook maximally. The second, the school provided only four meetings in each class to do this research, including pre-test and post-test. Therefore, the research would be different if the researcher get longer time to do the research.
