The Effect Of Clustering Technique On The Students Vocabulary Mastery
Vocabulary is one of the most fundamental elements in learning languages. Without vocabulary it is difficult for people to communicate each other. They will not be able to produce meaningful sentences that can be used to convey messages to others. Even to write or understand what they heard would be very impossible for them. Within the scope of education, understanding the use of words is mandatory, because this will guide and support students’ learning achievements. The need of this very important vocabulary is in contrast to the facts that show the inability of students, especially those who are learning languages in mastering the vocabulary today. Students often feel uneasy to deal with new and difficult words. As a result, many students are not able to speak properly and correctly. Here, as educators, teachers are required to be creative and wise in choosing and using appropriate techniques in teaching vocabulary to their students. Clustering technique is one of the techniques that can be used to solve this problem. This study aims to investigate whether the use of clustering technique especially thematic clustering provides a positive significant effect on the students’ vocabulary mastery or not. This study was in quantitative approach and used the quasi experimental research design. The quasi experimental design was used because it used two existing classes namely experimental class and control class as the subject without randomize it. The research was conducted at SMPN2 Wagir of Malang in the academic year of 2020/2021. There were 32 students for each class, so the total samples of the two classes were 64 students. Each class accepted treatment for two times. The treatment was given through face-to-face meetings. The experimental class was taught by using clustering technique, while the control class was taught by using vocabulary notebook. The data of this study were taken through test result of pre-test and post-test, and after that the data were calculated using SPSS 22 Version. Based on the data analysis of the research findings, it was found that clustering technique provides a positive significant effect on the students’ vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade of SMPN2 Wagir of Malang (t = 4.146, and p (2-tiled) = 0.000 (p < .05). It means that H0 (nul hypothesis) was rejected and H1 was confirmed. Based on the result of post-test in both classes it was found that the mean score of vocabulartest on experimental class through independents sample t – test was 75.62, on control class was 69.69. It means that the implementation of clustering technique gave positive significant effect on students’ vocabulary mastery.
