Improving Students Reading Ability Using Stad Strategy At SMK PGRI Singosari
The preliminary study showed that students‟ problems faced in the class were as follows: the students‟ reading ability was still low, the teaching technique was monotonous, and the students got difficulties to answer the teacher‟s question. Therefore, the researcher used STAD strategy to improve students‟ reading ability of the tenth grade students of SMK PGRI Singosari. Besides, this strategy would create an interesting and enjoyable learning atmosphere.
Relevant to the background, this study used classroom action research.. The subjects of this research were the tenth grade students that were divided into three classes, namely RPL, TEI, and TKJ who were in the second semester by the academic year of 2018/2019. The class consisted of 23 students, 18 males and 5 females. Researcher took this class as subject of the study because of some reading problems faced by students in the class. The researcher conducted this research in one cycle. The cycle consisted of six meetings. The instruments used in this research were test, observation checklist, and questionnaire.
The result of test showed that students‟ teams achievement division (STAD) strategy successfully improved students‟ reading ability and could help them to solve their problems. It was proven from the criteria of success that were reached in this cycle, the result showed that 20 students passed KKM with the mean score 87% and 3 or 13% students who still failed. It means that the researcher was successful in conducting this research because the students who passed the KKM were more than 75%. Thus, the research stopped.
Based on the result of the cycle, the implementing of students‟ teams achievement division (STAD) strategy proves that the teaching and learning process can improve the students reading ability, and the students are enthusiastic, active, work cooperatively, and the students have a responsibility to other members of group. In conclusion, students‟ teams achievement division (STAD) strategy is beneficial to use in teaching and learning process.
