An Analysis Of Figurative Langguage In Maya Angelou Five Selected Poems
Language and literature cannot be separated from each other. Language is the basic raw material or medium, through which literature is produced. Literature
can create its own world as a product of the unlimited imagination. Literature is not just a document of facts, it is not just the collection of real events although it
may happen in real life. This research was conducted to investigate the figurative languages used in Maya Angelou selected poems to distinguish the meaning of each figurative
language by using descriptive qualitative design. This research used the framework of Kennedy (1983) in order to identify the various figurative language used in Maya Angelou selected poems. The findings reveal that twelve figurative language of Kennedy with the highest frequency laid on personification that was applied as many as 15 data (30%) while the lowest frequency were metonymy, epiphora, and assonance applied as many as 1 time (2%) out of 50 data figurative language. From the finding of the research, it reveals that personification is the most figurative language found, because five selected poems describe the non-human objects are portrayed in such a way that we feel they have ability to act like human beings. While metonymy, epiphora, and assonance as the lowest frequency because these three figurative languages do not have strong emotional effects when used in poems
