Improving Syudents Reading Comprehenson Through Cooperatif Learning
Reading is one of the English skills that need to be mastered by students and comprehension is one of the goals in reading in order to improve other English skills that are writing and speaking. Since the teacher as a facilitator in teaching and learning process the teacher should change the teaching style into interactive activity by using one of the Cooperative Learning that is Student Teams Achievment Division (STAD). Through Cooperative Learning, students are able to interact each member by contributing their ideas and information on what they get from the reading text. Besides, the students are able to solve the problems that they found in comprehending the text. Since they are given rewards after taking quiz individually, they also have high motivation and responsible to be the best group.
This research is aimed to investigate how to Cooperative Learning improves students’ reading comprehension at Eleven Grade of SMK PGRI Pakisaji that consisted of 28 students. The research design used in this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). There were some intruments used to collect data were: observation sheet, test, and questionnaire. The data were analyzed to be compared to the criteria of success which 75% students’ reach the passing grade that is 70 and students’ participation which is 75% students active in the classroom.
The study was carried out in two cycles where each consisted of three meetings. In the first cycle, the result showed that criteria of success that were students’ partisipation and students’ achievement had not achieved yet. Then second cycle was carried out by re-planning the lesson plan with the new topic of reading text and result showed that second cycle had achieved the criteria of success. The students’ achievement reading comprehension could be seen by comparing the percentages of the students compentency test test in cycle I and cycle II. There were 61% of students could get the score equal or better in competency of test in cycle I and 79% students could achieve 70 or better in cycle II.
The research result proved that implementation of Cooperative Learning Technique in teaching and learning process could improve students’ reading comprehension as well as help the students to have good interaction, motivation as well appreciation each member in a group during discussion.
