An Analysis of Politeness Strategies Used by Jane as Main Characther in Lavender Movie

This research presents Politeness Strategy used by Jane as main character in Lavender movie. The research has two research problems, those are: What types of politeness strategy used by Jane as main character in lavender movie and what are the functions of politeness strategy used by Jane as main character in Lavender movie. The research applied the qualitative research and used descriptive method in this study because all data are in the form of words.
Based on explanation above, the research focuses on what was said, what context was and what degree of politeness. The researcher uses one of types of theoretical triangulation to help finding data which is suitable for dialogue of Jane in Lavender movie. There are some theories for how Jane uses types of politeness strategy based on Leech (2014); to analysis function of using Politeness strategy it can be seen in Brown and Yule (1985).
The descriptive qualitative is used to conduct this research. The reason is to describe and explain the politeness phenomena used by Jane communication. The type of the research is content analysis because it intended to analyze the containt of the data which are in the form of movie script to find the politeness strategies.
Based on the result of the analysis, it is found that there are eighty four by Jane utterances that use four politeness strategies. There are Bald on-Record with fifteen utterances, Positive Politeness with fifthy-two utterances, Negative Politeness with eight utterances and Off-Record with twenthy utterances. The functions of Bald on-Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness and OffRecord use by Jane communication. Other research may be interested to conduct research on politeness strategies in the other form of literary works such as movie, poetry and drama in this purpose of enriching the discourse studies.
