Speech Acts Analysis of The Main Character's Dialogues in "Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.2" Movie
When people exchange utterance with each other, they produce speech acts. Speech acts are part of language, it concerns in what people say through the language itself, such as the meaning behind of any utterances. The researcher chooses the main character’s dialogues of the “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” movie as a research object. On this research the researcher focus on analyzing illocutionary act which mean the meaning behind utterances. The study is aimed to investigate types and functions of illocutionary speech acts based on Searle theory and meaning behind them.
The research design used in this research is qualitative research design. In this research, the object is movie scripts which mean the case or the issue need thorough observation and detailed description, so the researcher used case study research to study the issue. In analyzing the data, the researcher collected the data in data corpus to categorize and describe the data found.
The result of data analysis found out that representative illocutionary acts has the most frequent appearance in the movie (44%), followed by Expressive (36%), Directives (19%), Commissives (4%), and Declarative has the least appearance with only two utterances (1%). As for the functions, 90 utterances are classified as Representative type which then classified into assertion, explanation, confirming, and stating functions; 66 utterances categorized as Expressive which state the feeling of anger, apology, surprised, disappointed, gratitude, annoyance, sarcasm, boasting, doubt, refusal, embarrassment, amazed, disgust, excitement, sadness, giving up, and, scared; 39 utterances are categorized as Directive illocutionary acts in the movie then classified as commanding, asking, and suggestion; 8 utterances categorized as Commissive illocutionary acts then divided into two categories; warning and promising; Lastly, only 2 utterances on the entire movie are categorized as Declarative.
Based on this study process and result, the researcher hopes that the next researchers will find this research useful for their study within the same topic but with different object of the study. The researcher also hopes that the next researchers will make a better improvement in researching speech acts and pragmatics than this study. The researcher hopes that after reading this study about speech act, it will make a better improvement in learning or adding knowledgeabout speech acts and pragmatics.
