The Effectiveness of Student Team Achievement Division (Stad) Method Towards Students' Reading Comprehension at Smk Budi Mulia Pakisaji

In learning English as a foreign language in school context, developing students’ reading comprehension is critically important. Reading is the necessity for students if they want to expand their knowledge. But many students had difficulty in comprehend the text. This study aims to know wether or not Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) method is effective towards students’ reading comprehension.
This study involved 41 students as the sample, it was separated into the experimental and the control group. A quasi-experimental research design was employed in this study. The experimental group was taught by using Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) method while the control group was taught using Direct Reading Activity (DRA) strategy Pre-test and post-test as the instrument of collecting data was administered for both of groups. The result showed that the t value was 2.546 and it was more than 0.05. It means that Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) method was effective in teaching reading comprehension
The finding can be interpreted using of Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) method was proven to be more effective than Direct Reading Activity (DRA) in teaching reading comprehension. It is suggested for English teachers in Senior High School to use STAD method in teaching reading since it is useful in improving students’ reading comprehension achievement.
