The Effect Of Describing Picture To Improve Studensts’ Speaking Skill (An Experimental Research With 8th Grade Students At SMP ISLAM SUNAN GIRI In The Academic Year Of 2016/2017)
There are some students get difficulty to study and practice speaking English well. That is way Describing Picture provides an alternative way to help students to learn and speak easily. This study aimed at finding out whether teaching speaking by using describing picture strategy elevates the students’ speaking skill at the second grade students of SMP Islam Sunan Giri, Malang. According to Huebner (1990: 37) picture is one of the visual aids, is very type of pictorial presentation. And according to Kidler (1992:1) as a media pictures can help the teacher to make the students interested and enjoyed to learn especially English. Moreover, pictures can present the real situation. It means that by using describing picture, the students can image the abstract to be real situation.
The post-test with quasi experimental design was used in conducting the research. The population of this study was the second grade students at SMP Islam Sunan Giri in the academic year 2016/2017. The experimental group of this study was class VIII B and the control group was class VIII A. The experimental group was taught by using describing picture whereas the control group was taught without using describing picture. After giving the treatment, the post test was conducted in both classes.
Based on the result of this study, the experimental group got 80.300 in mean scores and the control group got 67.78 in mean scores. Based on the difference between two means, it is proven that the experimental group got better scores than the control group. In order investigate whether the difference in means was statistically significant, t-test was applied. The result of independent sample test between the mean scores of experimental group showed that the significant (2- tailed) level. 000, it means the sig. 000 score was lower than t-table 0.05. Therefore, there was significant effect between the students who were taught by using describing picture and the students who were taught without describing picture. It shows that there was a positive effect after applying Describing Picture strategy in the experimental group. Thus, Describing Picture is recommended for teaching speaking
