The Effectiveness Of Using Cartoon Video On Students' Vocabulary Mastery Of First Grade At Junior High School
Vocabulary is one of the language aspects. Without understanding list of words with their meanings, the students cannot listen, speak, read and write well if they do not know the vocabulary well. They cannot do anything with four skills if they do not know vocabulary. Cartoon video is a media audio visual with cartoon characters and suitable for children. It can make learning more meaningful for students’ vocabulary mastery. Therefore, the objective of this study is to measure the effectiveness of using cartoon video on students’ vocabulary mastery.
The research design of this study is a quasi-experimental design which consists of the experimental group and the control group. The subject of this study is the first grade of SMPN 1 Pakisaji that consists of 27 students. They are VII G as experimental group (who are taught by using cartoon video), and VII H as control group (who are not taught by using cartoon video). The instruments used to collect the data were observation and test. Observation was used to help the researcher get the needed data. Test was used to measure the effectiveness of cartoon video on students’ vocabulary mastery of first grade after the researcher giving the treatment. Then, the result of test was analyzed by using Independent Sample T-test to know the mean difference between the experimental group and the control group.
The result of post-test showed that the mean of experimental group (the students taught using cartoon video) was 80.80 had higher mean than control group (the students taught using picture), 61.59. It can be concluded that there was significant effect of using cartoon video on students’ vocabulary mastery of first grade at SMPN 1 Pakisaji. It meant that the experimental group who were taught by using cartoon video got better vocabulary mastery than those in the control group who were not taught by using cartoon video. Besides, the result of Independent Sample T-test with significant level of 5% showed that the significant value or p-value was 0.0000218 that was lower than
0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected because the p-value (0.0000218) was lower than significant level (0.05) and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It means that there is a significant effect of using cartoon video on students’ vocabulary mastery of first grade at Junior High School.
Based on the result of this research, it was proven that there was a significant effect of using cartoon video on students’ vocabulary mastery of first grade at junior
high school. Therefore, the teachers are recommended to use cartoon video as media in teaching and learning process to make students easier to memorize vocabulary
and increase their score.
