The Effectiveness Of Numbered Head Together (NHT) Technique To Students Reading Comprehension Achievement At Eleventh Grade Of SMA Kristen Petra Malang
Reading is one of the basic skills that are taught to the junior high school and senior high school. Therefore, in this research, the researcher wants to help the students at the eleventh grade students of SMA Kr. Petra Malang by using Numbered Head Together Technique to increasing their reading comprehension achievement.
This researcher needs some theories to support, such as by Spencer Kagan (1993) to involve more students in the review of materials covered in a lesson and to check their understanding of a lesson and Cooper (1999: 282) states Numbered Head Together (NHT) technique is a cooperative learning strategy that holds each student in a group accountable for learning the materials
The research design of this study is quasi experimental research design. The population of this studies all of the second year students of SMA Kr. Petra Malang. The samples of this study are the classes XI IPA as an experimental group and XI IPS as a control group. The research instruments that were used on this study are observation checklist and test. There are two test used in this research. They are pre-test and post-test. Pre-test is test that is given before giving the treatment. Post test is given after the students get treatment about numbered head together.
The finding of this research is score of pre-test and post-test by experimental and control class. The mean score of pre-test for experimental group was 65.00 and for control group was 68.57 and mean score of post-test in experimental group was 85.36 and 73.93 for control group. After got score pre-test and post, the researcher was analyzed by using Independent sample T-test. Based on calculation using SPSS 22, the significant 2-tailed was 0.002. The significant 2 tailed was more than 0.05. It means that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Based on research finding, the researcher conducted that by using numbered head together is effective to teach reading in SMA Kr. Petra Malang. Based on the result above, the students who were given numbered head together technique had a higher score than students who were not given. Besides that, this technique was an effective way to improve student’s reading comprehension.
The researcher knows that this research is far for being perfect. So, it is suggested that the next researcher can use similar strategy with different population and sample. Different population and sample might different finding from the study.
