An Analysis Of Figurative Language Of Langston Hughes Poems
Language is a tool of communication used by society to communicate with others. Moreover, language is known as the sounds and words used by humans to express their thought and feelings. In daily conversation, people sometimes use and find beautiful imaginative language which are the kind of comparison, exaggeration, overstatement, and such beautiful words in their utterances. Those kinds are called figurative language.
Figurative language is language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. Figurative language beautifies and creates new experience of using language. Knowing the meaning of figurative language is very important to get deeper comprehension, especially in a poem.
Poem is kind of work of art which delineates life and human activities by presenting various actions. Usually, poets make the poem figuratively, to beautify or emphasize what they want to be expressed”. The poem that are analyzed in this study are ”Dreams, As I Grow Older, April Rain Song, Cross, Sick Room, 50-50, Harlem (Dream Deferrer), Silence, In Time of Silver Rain, Life is Fine”, written by Langston Hughes. Therefore, there are two problems that will be analyzed in this study, they are (1) kinds of figurative languages are used in Langston Hughes’ poems, (2) what are the meaning of figurative language used in this poems. In this study, the writer uses descriptive qualitative research design because this thesis studies about the analysis of figurative languages of Langston Hughes’ poems .The writer uses the structural theory to analyze the figurative language contained and also explains the definition of the figurative language and the meaning of the utterances.
The result of this study shows that Langston Hughes’ poems use many kinds of figurative languages; personification, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, symbolism, antithesis, and repetition. The most appearances is personification because the writer often create inanimate object or abstraction act like human qualities or abilities. Moreover, the entire meanings of Langston Hughes’ poems are telling about racism, dreams and eagerness to give spirit to himself. Finally, based on the finding the researcher would like to suggest for other researcher that it would be better if they do not only know about the kinds of figurative languages, but also to be able to understand about the meaning inside.Lastly, for the students of English, the researcher hopes that this thesis will give more knowledge about world of poetry, and increases student interest’s in studying poetry
