Reading is important for an academic success in learning English. Only few students of Junior High School like reading English, while others think that reading is boring. In order to avoid the students’ boredom, the teacher has to apply a strategy that can motivate the students to read. This kind of material is able to increase their interest in reading, give more new vocabulary, and give them more fun. Relate it to DRTA as the bridge. This study used Classroom Action Research ( CAR) because it aims at
improving the existing condition in educational practice. In carrying out this study, the researcher acted as teacher and the English teacher of SMP PGRI 03 Malang acted as the observer. The study was carried out in two cycles containing four steps. Namely: Planning, implementation, observation and reflection. The subjects of the study were 35 students second graders of A class at SMP PGRI 03 MALANG in the academic year 2015/2016. The data were collected through four research instruments: observation, reading test, documentation and field notes. All the data were analyzed, and the result of the analysis was compared with the criteria of success defined in this study to see whether or not they were achived.
The mean score of reading test in cycle 1 was 72 there were 23 of 35 students got score below criteria of successor less than 75. It meant that the target mean score had not been achieved. The action was to be succesful if the mean score of the students test in 75 (good category). Therefore, the actions were continued to the second cycle by revising the first action cycle. The result of reading test in cycle 2 was 80.85. It had acquired the target mean score in this research. So, the next action was stopped. Based on the results, it could be concluded that using DRTA strategy can improve the students’ reading ability
