An Analysis Of Figurative Language In One Direction’s Song Lyrics On Midnight Memories Album
Communication is the one of the characteristic of human being, we need to talk to other people and also to convey our ideas, feelings and understanding. The use of English in various types of art products are song, poetry, and poem. A song is a short piece of music with words that are sung. The words in a song are called lyrics that may consist of an intro, verses, choruses, bridges and a coda. A song is written by authors or composers based on their feelings and experiences. It contains of figurative language which is used by authors to deliver ideas, thinking, and authors’ opinions forward literature. Figurative language is the language that has more than one meaning. This research is focused on analyzing of figurative language used in One Direction’s song lyrics and the researcher wants to describe the content of these song lyrics by analyzing the kinds of figurative language used in each song lyrics. Then, the researcher describes each meaning of figurative language used in song lyrics itself.
This research used descriptive qualitative research in which the data are taken from the eight of One Direction’s song lyrics. In this analysis, the researcher used some process: First, writing the lyrics. Second, deciding which figurative languages in One Direction’s song lyrics. Third, describing and giving reasons. Fourth, rechecking with the expert .And the last, giving conclusion. Based on these processes, the researcher found nine types of figurative language from eight song lyrics. They were anaphora, oxymoron, simile, hyperbole, repetition, symbol, apostrophe, personification, and onomatopoeia. The most dominant used figurative language in One Direction’s song lyrics was hyperbole. There were sixteen figurative languages of hyperbole as the most dominant. And the second prominent was anaphora which were eleven figurative
languages.
Based on the conclusion, the researcher would like to offer some suggestion. The first is for students, if the students take songs not only simply for the pleasure of singing but also must able to go beyond it through analyzing in order to be able to get the meaning from songs. The second suggestion goes to English teachers. In order to make the teaching learning process more enjoyable and interesting, they must be a well prepared material to be taught about figurative language. The last suggestion is addressing to the future researchers. For the future researcher, it would be better if they will study figurative language found in a song merely but also they can study in other row materials such as; articles, films, magazines, drama, and so on.
