Developing Interactive CD For Basic Vocabulary Building In Young Learners
English subject for young learners especially in elementary school had been reduced by the government. It means the government has full authority to develop
the curricula and can be enriched with local subject charge by local governments. It is listed by the Minister of Education and Culture Republic of Indonesia number
57 year 2014 Article 5 of Verse 5; (No.57 Tahun 2014 Pasal 5 Ayat 5). English subject in most of elementary school is only as a local subject. Therefore, the entire English teacher of local subject in elementary school is required to optimize existing time to teach them. Furthermore, traditional media such as blackboard and textbook are not appropriate to be used to teach young learners. Besides, many children around the researcher’s environment addict on games in the computer whether online or not. Based on the background, the objective of the study was to know how interactive CD could be developed to build basic vocabulary in young learners.
This research conducted eight steps research and development (R and D) study which was adopted from Borg and Gall (1983:775): identifying problem, need analysis, developing the product, expert validation, revision, developmental try-out and revision. The subject of the research was the first grade of elementary school in SDN Kebonsari 2 Malang which involved 15 students. The researcher used some instrument to collect the data, those are interview, observation and questionnaire.
The result of development showed that the percentage of properness 97,92% from the expert in the content and 83,33% from the expert presentation of CD. By those results, the researcher concluded that the media is very proper to be used. Besides, the researcher also got 93,33% from the result of the students questionnaire and 75% from the result of the teacher questionnaire. By those results, the researcher concluded that developmental tryout of this research is successful.
Besides, the CD is provided to fulfill the need of the first grade elementary school students’ in English subject. This CD interactive can be used as an alternative media and has a purpose to optimize the existing time in teaching and learning English subject. Moreover, it also can be used as a self-study. Finally, based on the research some suggestions were proposed. The next researcher should consider to use Action Script 3.0 upward in Adobe Flash and who wants to develop interactive CD for vocabulary are encouraged to choose different grades and topics.
