Language Styles Used In " The Pursuit Of Happynes" Movie By Will SMith (2006)

People use language in their everyday conversation to share ideas, information and knowledge. Without language as the means of communication, it would be difficult, probably impossible for people to express their needs. Moreover each person has his/her own styles in order to express what he/she wants to share and it will be easier for the addressees to understand the addressers’ idea if they are familiar with the addressers’ language style. Movie is communication media that give valuable messages to audiences. Movie has a storyline with interesting words that make this medium to be very important
in human existence. The chosen language that is used in the movie is not simple words but has a connection with literary language in one storyline. The problem of the study is What kind of language styles are used in “The Pursuit of Happyness” movie and What language styles dominantly occur in “The Pursuit of happyness” movie by Will Smith (2006)? The focus of this study is to analyze language styles used by the characters in “The Pursuit of Happyness” movie. Based on the purpose of the research, this research uses a descriptive qualitative research. The data were from “The Pursuit of happynes”movie. The data source of the research were taken from “The Pursuit of Happyness” movie. The researcher took the data from the characters’ utterances that contain language styles. The dialogue and subtitle are transferred into written text forms as a movie script. Triangulation was done in this study. Triangulation was one to check trustworthiness, validity and reliability of the data. This study applied the investigator triangulation as a technique to check trust worthiness, validity and reliability of the data. The researcher found 30 data of language styles from the utterances in dialogues in the movie. The data were then classified into four types of language style. Those types are Intimate, Casual, Consultative and formal.In total, there are 14 intimate, 6 casual, 6 consultative and 4 formal language styles found in this study. The most frequent used language style is intimate style. Formal language is the least language style used in this study. The researcher hopes that the result of this study could help enrich knowledge about the use of language styles in communication. It is also expected that future researchers could use the result of this study as reference if they want to continue extend this study using different topics, method and media
