An Analysis Of Grammatical Errors In Argumentative Essays Of The Fifth Semester Students Of English Education Department Of University Of Kanjuruhan Malang
This study attempts to analyze types of grammatical errors and investigate the frequency of errors in tense usage. The researcher analyzes 20 Argumentative essays written by the fifth semester students of English Education Department Students of University of Kanjuruhan Malang. The Error Analysis (EA) theoretical approach was applied for this study. Some steps to analyze the data are: identifying, describing, explaining, and evaluating learners’ errors. The findings show that there are 16 types of grammatical errors. Based on the calculated data, it has been found 171 errors in tense usage. Since present tense is the most used tense, number of errors in its tense becomes the highest one. There are 140 errors (81%) that come from present tense usage, and 15 errors (8.5%) in future tense usage. Almost similar to the use of future tense, misuses of tense have 12 errors (7%). There are 3 errors (2%) in using present perfect. Meanwhile the lowest error is 1 error (0.5%) found in error in using past tense.
From making the errors, the researcher attempts to find some causes of the errors. The most frequent errors (errors in using present tense) happen because the students are careless, actually they know the grammatical rules, but they do not pay more attention in applying them well, so that they make mistakes. In other cases, the students tend to make errors because of L1 interference. Occasionally the students are confused to identify phrase as a subject, so that they use inappropriate verb/be, and they are confused to differentiate between verb and adjective. A few numbers of errors in using future tense, past tense, present perfect, and misuse of tense happen because the students too often use present tense, so that it influences the use of those tenses.
Finally, the students have to be more careful in writing English composition. They should master the tense forms of English in order that they can apply the tense appropriately and can avoid the errors. The lecturers are suggested to improve their grammar teaching, especially in teaching tenses, and find the most effective method to teach in that point.
