Improving Student's Vocabulary Mastery Through Word Walls For The First Grade Student's Of SMP PGRI 2 Lawang
In learning English, vocabulary is one of the important aspects that should be learned by the students. Vocabulary is needed to improve four language skills
that include listening, speaking, reading and writing. Vocabulary is one of the most important aspects of the language to learn English (Syarifuddin, 1996). It
means that vocabulary has important role in English, so the English teacher should have good strategy or media in teaching English vocabulary. Vocabulary
mastery is very important because it will carry the student in learning process.
This study was aimed to increase students’ vocabulary of the first grade by using word walls. This strategy had been designed to support learning for vocabulary mastery in the classroom to be more effective, active and interesting way to teach vocabulary because it could help students to recognize, promoted independence, developed a growing core of words, and also easy to remember vocabulary.
The researcher used Classroom Action Research (CAR) is this study. The researcher conducted this study at SMP PGRI 2 Lawang. This study is aimed to
increase students’ vocabulary on the first grade by using word walls. The researcher conducted in two cycles with the phases of planning, observing,
analyze and reflecting. For the data collection the researcher used some instruments such as: interview, filed note, test and documentation. This Classroom Action Research (CAR) used two cycles to improve students’ vocabulary mastery through word walls. The result of pre-test was 7 students (38.8%) got score under 75 and 11 students (61.1%) got score above 75. The score in the first cycle was 15 students (71.4%) got score 75 and there were 6 students (28.5%) got score below 75. The score in the second cycle was 18 students (94.4%) who got score above 75, and 1 student (5.5%) got score below 75. It means that the criteria of success reached after conducted two cycles, so the cycle is stopped. From this study, the researcher concludes that using word walls in teaching vocabulary is a good way and efficient to make the students enjoy and easier to memorize words in learning English at the classroom.
