Analysis On Direct And Indirect Speech Act Of The Character “TONY STARK” In “IRON MAN:2” Movie

Language is one of important things in communication. Through language people can share anything they want, feel, even they thought. In communication, peolpe deliver their intention by using sentence or utterance. Sentences and utterance that they utter sometimes has many meanings. From that point, we could understand that every sentence or utterance that we utter has its own act, it is known as speech act. The implementation of speech act in real communication sometimes hiding in lingual form and often makes misunderstanding in its interpretation. The example of interesting implementation of speech act is movie. Movie is one of media that has conversation that same as communication in real context. Therefore, this study only focused on the speech act in cartoon movie.
This research used a descriptive qualitative method to conduct this research. It was used to describe and explain the direct and indirect speech act uttered by the main character. The source of the data was the script of the film “Iron Man:2”. Then, the data were analyzed with comparing the relationship between three structural forms and three general communicative function categories proposed by Yule (1996). In was found that were 243 utterances from Tony Stark, 222 utterances indicated in direct speech act and 21 utterances that include in indirect speech act. There were 167 uses declarative from sentence, 16 uses imperative form sentence, and 60 uses interrogative from sentence.
The result of this research was that most of utterances is direct speech act. The highest frequency direct speech acts uttered by the main character was declarative sentence. There were 165 utterances whose found as declarative form. Imperative sentence form were lowest portion in utterance of this movie, there were 17 utterances. And the other was 61 utterances that found as interrogative sentence form.
Finally, the researcher suggested that this research result gave contribution the students and the other researcher. Researcher hopes that this study will be a useful for English students and the other researcher to enrich their understanding about the direct and indirect speech act especially in movie.
