Improving Students' Reading Skill Using Speed Reading Technique AT SMP PGRI 01 Pakisaji Malang
English is one of the International languages, which is used by the majority of people in the world. The students had difficulties in studying English since it is the foreign language for them, for example, the students at eighth grade students of SMP PGRI 01 Pakisaji Malang. Based on result of the preliminary study, it was found that students spend much time to understand the text given by the teacher. Although for a simple text, the students confessed that it was still difficult. They read the text word by word and also the students had bad habits in reading such as: lip movements, sub- vocal reading, finger pointing, and head movement. This activity took a lot of time. For the reason, the problem needs to be solved. In this study, the researcher used a speed reading technique to improve the students’ reading skill. In addition, the students’ and the teachers’ opinion were explored to understand whether the use of this technique was also able to motivate the students and make the teaching and learning process interesting. The researcher used classroom action research and applied two cycles. The researcher chose recount text which was suitable with the material. Every meeting, the researcher also gave the assignment to know the improvement of the students’ reading skill.
The researcher determined the criteria of success that is 80% students in the class must achieve the score 75 and the students were interested in the teaching process and got motivation. Besides, the standard minimum score of English subject was 75. The researcher had two cycles. The result of cycle 1 was 60% failed and cycle 2 was 85% succeed. The implementation of speed reading technique in cycle I showed that speed reading technique got improvement even though not significant. Meanwhile, the result of cycle 2 indicated that 85% of the students have achieved score 75. It means that the technique was successful. The researcher suggests the English teacher in SMP PGRI 01 Pakisaji Malang to use speed reading technique to improve students’ reading skill. The teacher can use speed reading technique to stimulate the students’ participation in
the class. The researcher also suggests the students to be more active in English class. They could speed of the reading and understanding of the reading. Additionally, the result of this study can be used as additional information and reference for further researcher to conduct other research in other skill.
