The Effectiveness Of Comic In Students’ Reading Ability On Recount Text At The Second Grade Of SMPN 2 Trawas Mojokerto
Since English is an international language, in this globalization era learning English is very important for human life, English is not only used as the media to
communicate. In the Indonesian context using English is still limited. Teaching English in Indonesia is not balance with the approach or the strategy. And the
crucial problem there is no appropriate media to teach English. English consist of four skills that is reading, writing, speaking and listening. Reading is one of the important skills in English. The difficulties that were faced by the Indonesian learner in reading is lazy to read long paragraph, reading is a boring activities, less in pronunciation, vocabulary, and don’t understand the meaning. To solve the problem, the researcher use appropriate media to teach reading. The media is comic, a comic is the arrangement of pictures or images and words to narrate a story or dramatize an idea (Eisner, 1985:5).
The research conducted at the second grade of SMPN 2 Trawas, the objective of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of comic in students’ reading
ability on recount text. The design of the research was experimental design. The sample of the study was two groups, those were experimental and control group. The instrument that used in this study was test. T‐test formula was used to analyze the data.
The result of the data showed that the mean score from experimental group was higher than control group. The mean score of control group was 74,63 while
the control group was 82,04 (82,04>74,63). The minimum score from experimental group is 65 and from control group 60. And the maximum score from experimental group was 90 while the maximum score from control group was 80. The t‐test showed that the tvalue was 3,918 with df 52 and the significance
(2‐tailed) was 0,000, it was less than 0,05. It means that hypothesis is accepted. So, students who are taught by using comic have significant difference than those who are taught by using conventional technique in their reading ability on recount text. In conclusion, the result of the study showed that a comic strip was the effective media to teach reading recount text. It was proved by the result of the test. So, the researcher suggests the English teachers and future researchers to use comic as the media for teaching English, because it makes students more active and easier to learn English especially in reading ability on recount texts
