The Use Of Code Switching In English Teaching And Learning Process At SMPN 2 Wagir Malang
This study investigates the types of code switching based on Poplack’s (1980) theories and Hoffmann’s (1991) theories about the reasons for code switching. This study was conducted at SMPN 2 Wagir Malang. This study focused on the English teachers’ code switching from English to Indonesian and vice versa in the school. The researcher used descriptive qualitative as the research design. The English teachers were the subject and their code switching was the object of this study. The researcher used observation, documentation, and interview as the instruments. The data collection included observation, documentation, interview, transcribing, and analysing. Moreover, the analysis steps were started from the data entry, data categorizing, triangulation, and the last was drawing conclusion. Based on the analysis it is found that the English teachers of SMPN 2 Wagir Malang switch their language from Indonesian to English or vice versa during English teaching and learning process. The researcher found 133 data containing code switching, 74 were intra-sentential, 54 were inter-sentential, and 5 were tag-switching. Moreover, the researcher also found that the teachers had
some reasons behind their code switching behaviour in the classroom. Out of 133 code switching occurred, 41 were used for repetition used for clarification, 38 were used to talk about a particular topic, 34 were used to clarify the speech content for interlocutor, 18 were used to be emphatic about something, and 2 were used due to interjection.
Intra-sentential was the most frequent code switching used by the English teachers. Besides, the reason for teachers’ code switching was dominated by repetition used for clarification. The teachers need to repeat the meaning of certain sentences or even the words into the other language because of the students’ low level of English ability. People are suggested to read this paper in order to extend their knowledge about linguistics, especially code switching. Besides, the researcher suggests the English teachers to used code switching during English classroom activity. Moreover, the future researchers can study more about the types and reasons for code switching related to the other theories and they are also suggested to study the functions of code switching
