An Analysis Of Word Formation Processes In Time Magazines
This study is concerned with morphological process. Specifically the study deals with word formation processes in Time magazines. The objectives of this research are to find out kinds of word formation processes found in Time magazines and to identify the kinds of word formation which are mostly used in Time magazines.
This research applied qualitative approach because the analysis was in the form of description rather than number. This study focus on word formation processes found in Time magazines. The data sources of this research are fifteen articles of Time magazines, while the data of this research are all words and phrases in those fifteen articles which contain kinds of word formation processes such as coinage, borrowing, compounding, blending, clipping, backformation, conversion, acronyms, derivation, affixation, and multiple processes.
The analysis shows that there are ten aspects of word formation processes, namely coinage 3 words (0.12%), borrowing 861 words (34.92%), compounding 90 words (3.65%), clipping 29 words (1.17%), backformation 34 words (1.37%), conversion 30 words (1.21%), acronym 18 words (0.73 %), derivation 372 words (15.09 %), affixation 854 words (34.64 %), and multiple processes 174 words (7.05%) , it means that borrowing is the most dominant type used in Time magazines.
From the analysis result, some suggestions are offered to English lecturers, they should not teach vocabulary separately from sentence and using real media is worth doing. For English students, they should broaden their vocabulary skills by reading other media and apply the knowledge that they get from magazine and lectures. For future researcher, they can take the findings as their consideration to carry out similar studies with different subjects, objects and perspectives.
