The Effectiveness Of Using Tourism Brochure In Teaching Writing Descriptive Text
Writing skill is the most difficult to master because writing consists of other skills and language components such as grammar and vocabulary. However, if the teacher can present the suitable media related to the topic, writing will be fun and easy to master. In teaching writing, a teacher must be able to present suitable media in the class that can attract students’ motivation in teaching and learning process. So, the students can express their thought, feeling or idea. there are many media which can be used in teaching writing, one of them is using tourism brochure. Tourism brochure is a short booklet or pamphlet. It is thin, boundless which usually gives information about forthcoming events, place, holiday sites, product etc. The researcher formulated the problem of the study as “ do the students who are taught using tourism brochure have better ability than students who are taught without using tourism brochure. The objective of study was to know the students’ writing ability in descriptive text by using tourism brochures and taught without using tourism brochures. The research design in this study was quasi experimental research. In quasi experimental there were two groups (control group and experimental group) .The population of this study was all of eigth grade students of SMPN 1 Kutorejo on second semester. The sample was VIII-A and VIII-B class consisting of 3O students each. The research instrument that was used is writing descriptive test. Test administered before conducting treatment that is called pre-test and also administered after conducting treatment that is called post-test. Treatment that was used was by using tourism brochure. The data of this research was students score in pre-test and post-test, and to analysis those data the researcher used independent t-test on SPSS program 19.
The result showed the mean of the both groups were 67.50 ( control group ) and 67.16 ( experimental group ). And the result of post test of the both groups were 72,66 and 73.16. Based on the post test, there was the differences between the students who were taught using tourism and without tourism brochure. But the diffrence was not significant. In the independent sample table, the researcher know that tourism brochure did not give a big effect because if the significant 2 tailed 0,05, it means that Ho is accepted and Ha is rejected. Based on the calculation using SPSS 19, the significant 2-tailed was 0,743. The significant 2 tailed more than 0.05. It means that Ho was accepted and Ha was rejected.
