Improving Students' Writing Skill On Descriptive Text By Using Think-Talk-Write (TWT) Strategy At First Grade Of SMP Islam Diponegoro Wagir
Writing is one of the language skills that should be taught beside the other skills. Based on the curriculum of junior high school recomended by the goverment, there are some texts which have to be mastered by the students at junior high school. One of the texts is descriptive text. Descriptive text is a text that generally used in daily life for describing things, place, or person. The function of descriptive text is to give information to the readers.
The students of VII grade at SMP Islam Diponegoro Wagir had many problems in writing. The students had difficulties to find ideas to write and there were errors in vocabulary items, grammar, and mechanichal. Therefore, the researcher wanted to improve their writing skill through Think-Talk-Write strategy. This study was aimed to find out whether Think-Talk-Write strategy improve the students’ writing skill on descriptive text at the first grade of SMP Islam Diponegoro Wagir, to collect students’ perception and impression of ThinkTalk-Write strategy, and to collect the progressive result of students’ achievement in learning writing descriptive text by using Think-Talk-Write strategy at the SMP Islam Diponegoro Wagir. Subject in this study is class VII B students of SMP Islam Diponegoro Wagir which consist of 22 students.
The instruments used in this research were interview, questionnaire, observation checklist, and writing test. In this study, the researcher conducted a classroom action research as the methodology of this research. This classroom action research was implemented in two cycles that were cycle I and cycle II. Cycle I consisted of four meetings, the first meeting was giving pre-test, second and third meeting were giving treatment by implementing the Think-Talk-Write strategy and the last meeting was giving a post test. The result of cycle I was not successful, because the students did not achieve the criteria of the success that was 75 as the minimum score. Cycle II consisted of two meetings, the first meeting was giving the treatment by implementing Think-Talk-Write strategy, and the second meeting was giving a post test.
The weaknesses in cycle I were covered in cycle II, the students’ scores were satisfying and fulfilled the criteria of success or minimum score. It can be taken the conclusions that there are an improvement. The students’ ability in writing descriptive text improved after being taught by using Think-Talk-Write strategy. Finally it is advisable to the teachers to use Think-Talk-Write as a strategy in teaching English because it makes the students motivated in learning English especially in writing skill. For the next researcher should learn the weeknessess of this research and apply this strategy more perfectly than this study.
