An Analysis Of Code Switching On Farah Quinn's "Ala Chef" Cooking Programme

This research is to analyze code switching that is produced by Farah Quinn in “Ala chef” cooking programme as one of television programs in Trans TV. The main purpose of this study is to get information about the types of code switching, the possible reasons Farah Quinn switches her language, and about the way code switching used by Farah Quinn. This study has two significance: theoretical and practical. Here, especially for the reader to comprehend in code switching which has the relationship with their subject that will be increasing their insight and can be used as alternative references especially for the students of English Department. They can use two languages especially Indonesian and English have the coherencies between switching many languages and increase insight about audio lingual.
The research design of this research was descriptive qualitative design because this research do not make statistic or type calculation. The researcher just gets the data from analyzing conversation containing code switching of the presenter’s utterances on 1st February 2011 to 9th November 2013. For documentation the researcher used videos that downloaded from YouTube about “Ala chef” CookingProgramme in Trans TV.
Based on the findings, there were three types of code switching used by Farah Quinn on “Ala Chef Cooking Programme, those are: emblematic-code switching, inter-entential code switching, and intra-sentential code switching. The most code switching used by Farah Quinn was Intra-sentential code switching, there are 45 sentences. Meanwhile, besides the types that occurred, the reasons of using code switching from total 77, the most reason of using code switching was “talking about particular topic”, there were 54. In contrast, the lowest reason of using code switching was “Being emphatic about something or someone” there is only 1 sentence and “expressing group identity, there is only 1 sentence. And the way code switching used by Farah Quinn is that Farah Quinn often used code switching on her conversation because the researcher found that
she uses code switching more than one time on her utterances. Besides, two reasons that did not occur in this cooking programme were “interjection” and “Intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor”.
In conclusion, the code switching phenomenon was actually not only found in written text but also in television programme or daily conversation. By
learning code switching, whether the researcher, the readers, or the next researchers were able to know widely about code switching, especially about the types and the reason of using code switching and the way code switching used by bilingual or multilingual.
