The Effectiveness Of Grammar Consciousness-Raising Activities On Students' Grammatical Competence At SMKN 1 Singosari
English grammar is one of the English competences that consists of system of a language which must be comprehended and mastered by English language students because it promotes students become a more effective writers and speakers in communicating by using English in real communication. In order to increase students’ grammatical competence, grammar consciousness-raising activities technique was used. The current studies have proved that this technique was effective in teaching grammar. Therefore, the researcher would like to investigate the effectiveness of grammar consciousness-raising activities on students’ grammatical competence.
This study involved 70 students then separated them into the experimental group and the control group, and applied a quasi experimental research design. Those groups were applied in different treatments in which grammar consciousness-raising activities technique only conducted in the experimental group. The data were gained from pre-test and post-test, questionnaire, and observation. The primary data were gained by comparing the results of post-test from the experimental and control group. Questionnaire and observation were collected by the researcher in order to support the result of the main data.
The researcher gave pre-test both of the experimental and the control groups then administered different treatments. Finally, the post-test was conducted to both groups. The results of those tests were computed by using SPSS 19.0 program. The result of t-test showed that t value was 2.433 in which it was greater than 0.05. It showed that the effectiveness of grammar consciousness-raising activities on students’ grammatical competence was statistically found. The results of questionnaire and observation also supported that result. It was resulted that the students were highly motivated in learning grammar after using this technique.
The researcher recommends this technique to English teachers in teaching grammar. It was proved that this technique was effective and able to motivate the students to learn and master the grammar of English well. Moreover, the result of this study will be useful for the future researchers to use this technique, grammar consciousness-raising activities, to investigate other English skills or competences in the next studies.
