The Effectiveness Of Oral Feedback On Students’ Writing Ability At SMA PGRI 6 Malang
Language is a means of communication. In this world, there are many languages for communication. Yet from those languages, English seems to be the most important language in the world’s civilization. English constitutes a means of international communication. In order to master English well, students must be able to master four language skills. They are listening, speaking, reading and writing. Writing ability is important to learn because it is a basic communication skill.
To improve writing skill, there are many ways that can be used in teaching and learning process. Providing feedback is one of them. Ur (1996) defines feedback as information that is given to the learner about his or her performance of the learning task, usually with the objective of improving his or her performance.
This research was intended to know whether or not there was a significant effect of using oral feedback toward grade X students’ writing skill at SMA PGRI 6 Malang. Research design used in this research was experimental research design. The population of this research was the tenth grade students of SMPN 1 Wagir in the 2014/2015 academic year consisting of two classes. The research respondents were X class A and B. X class A was used as the experimental group and X class B was used as the control group. The data obtained were analyzed statistically by using independent sample t-test using SPSS 19 version. The primary data of this research were collected from the students’ post test, while the supporting data were gained trough interview and observation. The primary data were collected then analyzed by using independent sample t-test formula. Based on the calculation, the mean score of the experimental group was higher than the mean score of the control group (71.12>64.81). The result of the independent sample t-test analysis was lower than 0.05 (0.046< 0.05). Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) formulated: “The students who are given oral feedback do
not achieve better English writing achievement compared to those who are not given the same treatment” was rejected. On the other hand, the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. The findings indicated that there was a significant effect of oral feedback toward students’ writing skill at SMA PGRI 6 Malang. Therefore, it is suggested
that the English teacher uses oral feedback as an alternative teaching technique in teaching writing
