Improving Students' Speaking Skill By Using Role Play Of Public Junior High School V Malang
Speaking is use of words in an ordinary voice, uttering words, knowing and being able to use language, expressing oneself in words of making speech. The students of first grade at Public Junior High School V Malang have many problems in speaking. They have not mastered enough vocabularies yet. Hence, they get problems to talk about their thought. Their pronounciation are poor and there are much hesitation in their speaking. Therefore, the researcher wants to improve their speaking skill through role play technique. In this case, the students can practice their speaking because they have opportunity to speak up openly. Speaking is the main goal of many students. Speaking is oneofEnglish abilities thatshould be used by the teacher with the students in the teaching learning process. There are five components in speaking. Those are comprehension, grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary and fluency.Teaching speaking, as a second language is teachinglearners to produce the English speech sounds and sounds patterns and also use the language as a means of expressing values. There are some ways to promote speaking activities such as discussion, role play and simulation, interview, reporting, prepare talks and dialogue and this study use role play technique to improve students’ speaking proficiency. Role play technique is a kind of life game that has a goal, rules and involved
feeling of fun. Thiscouldbe achieved by creating hypothetical situations and circumstances expressedpractically in a classroom which facilitate the combination of theory and practice. There are two types of role play that are used in this research namely scripted and unscripted role play. In implementing role play in teaching speaking, there are four steps that must be done by the researcher namely preparation, time arrangement, the aims and follow up. The researcher conducted the Classroom Action Research to apply role play technique in first grade at Public Junior High School V Malang. In this research,
the research procedure used Kemmis and MC Taggart procedure that is planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The researcher uses observationchecklist to know whether this technique is successful or not. The percentage researcher’s target of students speaking score was ≥85 for higher achiever, ≥ 80 for middle achiever, and ≥ 75 for lower achiever. In implementing role play technique , the researcher divided the students into sixteen group that consisted of two students, they must discuss and study about given script based on the topic with their partner and prepare for their presentation. This classroom action research would be implemented in to two cycles that were cycle 1 and cycle 2 where each cycle consisted of three meetings.
