Developing Reciprocal Teaching Strategy To Teach Reding Comprehension At The Eight Grades Students Of SMP Islam Ma'arif 02 Malang
Reading is the most useful skill and has an important role in human’s life. Reading is a process in which reader finds information given by the writer in the written form. The students had some difficult in reading activities. They got difficulties to understand and get the message of a text. Therefore, the researcher wanted to develop the reciprocal teaching strategy to teach reading. The objective of this particular research and development is to produce reciprocal teaching strategy to teach reading comprehension designed for the eighth graders of SMP Islam Ma’arif 02 Malang. To achieve the goal of this study, the researcher adapted the model of R&D proposed by Borg and Gall (1983) with several modifications. The development procedures consisted of 6 steps: (1) Needs analysis (2) Developing Materials (3) Experts and Teachers Validation (4) Try-Out/Testing the Method (5) Revising the Method (6) Final Method. The instruments used to collect the data were observation checklist, interview and questioner.
Reading materials are then developed based on the obtained data in the need analysis phase. Expert validation is appertaining to evaluating the product meticulously by judging and giving feedback about it. The expert validation results are then used as the consideration for the product before the try out is applied. To understand the text and with respect to attractiveness, lots of pictures and illustrations are relevantly included. Reading practices such as True or False, W-H Questions and Hidden Words are laid there in. The product of this study has been validated by an expert and the English teacher also revised on the root of the feedback and comments given. After the revision is undergone, the product is tried out to 40 students of VIII-E at SMP Islam Ma’arif 02 Malang. The results of the try-out described that the students are mostly interested in and enjoy reading the materials because the gained lots of new and precious information from the variety of topics offered in the materials. They stated that the materials can help them to develop their reading skills in fun way. In conclusion chapter, the reading comprehension module of this study are hugely expected to carry a positive bearing on the teaching and learning of reading. It was great to motivate the students to learn English through reading activity by providing such product. Most of the students were interesting and felt curious about the text.
