The Effectiveness Of Herringbone Technique In Teaching Reading Narrative Text At The Second Grade Of SMPN 1 Trawas
English is a foreign language for Indonesian students. Because of it, when they learn English students find difficulties in comprehend is text. Thus, teachers should have an interesting method when they are teaching English in order to make the students easier to understand it and interested to reading English. Teaching reading with graphic it makes teaching learning process more interesting. One of graphic organizers to teach reading English is Herringbone
Technique. According to Deegan (2006:102) Herringbone strategy is a strategy that develops comprehension of the main idea by plotting who, what, when,
where, why, and how question on a visual diagram of a fish skeleton. This thesis focuses on the research of Herringbone Technique in teaching reading narrative text. The objective of the study was to know the effectiveness of Herringbone technique in teaching reading narrative text.
The research was conducted at the second grade students of SMPN 1 Trawas. The research design used by the researcher was experimental research design. The sample were two groups, those were experimental and control group. The researcher treated the experimental group by using Herringbone Technique in
teaching reading, but for the control group is taught by applying conventional technique. The two groups are given pre-test at the beginning. Then after being
given treatments, the two groups are given post-test. The instruments which were used in this research were test, observation, and documentation. T-test formula was used to analyze the data. Based on the data analysis, the result of statistical calculation showed that the mean score of the experimental group (86, 72) is higher than the mean score of the control group (70, 31) and the result of T-test was 9, 391. The significant value of this research is less than 0,05 (0,000 < 0,05). It means that alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It can be seen that there is significant difference in the achievement of students between those who were taught by using Herringbone Technique and who were taught by using conventional one. This study supports by Deegan (2006:102) that by using Herringbone technique it can boost the student’s achievement in reading narrative text at the second grade of SMPN 1 Trawas. In conclusion, the results of the study showed that Herringbone technique were effective in teaching reading narrative text. The researcher offers some suggestions. For the teacher, the teacher should give variations in teaching, especially using Herringbone Technique in teaching reading narrative text. For the students, the students should practice a lot of reading English texts in order to increase their knowledge. For the next researchers, should try to find the other
