Watching film is one of various ways to obtain enjoyment in life. Film reflects the life of human being, people not only get contentment and joy but also learn about moral value. Besides, there are aspects which are possibly presented in the film that can be analyzed. In this study, the researcher analysed a film entitled “Dear John”. She tried to find out the character and characterization in this film, from this point the researcher focused on the main character and characterization of “Dear John” movie. The researcher knew several characters and their characterization. Therefore, the objective of the study were to have a description of the characterization of the main characters of Dear John movie.
Due to the study that focused on Dear John movie, the researcher choosed qualitative research. The reason that the data was not numerical. The point of the chapter four contains descriptions that the character and characterization in the film. Here, the researcher used method through trait approach of the drama (speech, action, and thoughts). It means that the characterizations of characters were concluded by author and readers. In this study, the researcher tried to describe the main character and characterization of “Dear John” movie. The main characters are John Tyree and Savannah Curtis.
From the reseach finding the researcher found the main characters from John Tyree and Savannah Curtis. Characterization of Special Forces Army Sergeant John Tyree (Channing Tatum) was home on a two-week leave from Germany. He met Savannah Curtis (Amanda Seyfried) after he dived into the ocean to retrieve Savannah's purse that had fallen off the pier. Johnwas smitten by Savannah and fell in love at first sight. Savannah was a college student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was on spring break and was helping build a house for Habitat for Humanity. John joined in with Savannah to help build the house. Along the way a budding romance occured, and Savannah fell deeply in love with John. As she is about to go back to college, she promised to write John overseas during the next 12-months until he returned to her after completing his enlistment. Their love put to the test when John reenlisted after the September 11th attack.
The reseacher suggests that the readers have to be involved directly in understanding and value the work of literature by analyzing the characterization of character. Character and characterization, besides theme, plot and setting can be found by watching movie and put the characters based on their position in the story.
