A Pragmatic Analysis Of Colloquial Languages Used On Facebook
Colloquial language is a language variation that is used in conversation or written communication in informal circumstance. The form of colloquial language is easy to understand and simple. So that, people are easy to updates their Facebook statuses while doing other activities and to make their statuses looked more interesting. The use of colloquial language on Facebook update statuses are related to Pragmatics. The colloquial languages that are used by Facebook members in their update statuses usually have different meanings from the original expression stated in the statuses. To avoid misconception or misunderstanding, readers, therefore, should know the implicature or the hidden meanings of the Facebook statuses.
This study aims at describing the types and the implicature meanings of colloquial languages used on Facebook update statuses. To get the results, this study used descriptive qualitative research design, because the data were in the form of utterances. The objects of this study were 20 member’s update statuses on Facebook who were the researcher’s online friends who were very active in updating their status. The data were collected by selecting the statuses of 20 member of Facebook mentioned from January 2015 until February 2015. The data were analyzed by coding the kind of colloquial languages and described the implicature meanings of those colloquial languages.
The researcher found 40 colloquial languages used by the participants in their Facebook update statuses. From those data, the researcher found 5 kinds of colloquial languages. They are Acronym, Abbreviation, Clipping, Blending and hypocorism. The total frequency and percentage of those kinds of colloquial languages are 11,5 (28,75%) Acronyms, 7,5 (18,75 %) Abbreviations, 10 (25%) Clippings, 6 (15%) Blendings and 5 (12, 5%) Hypocorisms. It means that the most dominant type of colloquial language used by the participants in their Facebook update statuses are Acronym and Clipping. The least colloquial language used by the participants in their Facebook statuses is Hypocorism. In term of implicature meaning, almost all of the statuses described the participants’ activities, hope, feelings and new experiences. Languages variations that were used by the participants in their Facebook update statuses were influenced by the participants’ background such as occupation, education, gender and age.
The results of this study are useful for readers since they are able to learn about colloquial languages deeply and the implicature meaning of those colloquial languages and increase their vocabulary in written communication using social media. Future researchers, who are interested in analyzing the same topic are able to extend this study by, for example, analyzing other objects in social media using other aspects of pragmatics.
