Illocutionary Acts Uttered By The Main Character In Ryan Murphy “Eat Pray Love”
People communicate each other through languages, but the sentence that uttered is not always their intended meaning. Speech act as the branch of Linguistics analyzes about performed in saying something. Sometimes people tend to deliver their thought indirectly. In this case, knowing the speakers intended meaning is very important to avoid misunderstanding. The researcher is interested in analyzing illocutionary acts on movie because movie is one of media which contains a lot of speech act. The researcher chooses movie “Eat Pray Love” as the research object.
The theory of illocutionary act by Searle is choosen because it is used to describe the illocutionary acts uttered by the main character. This research attempts to investigate the phenomena of illocutionary acts uttered by the main character in Ryan Murphy “Eat Pray Love”. It investigates the context underline illocutionary acts used by the main character, identifies types of illocutionary acts uttered by the main character of the movie. Since the research question are determined in this research.
The researcher identifies the illocutionary acts utterances of the conversation used by the main characters to analyze five types of illocutionary acts. The descriptive qualitative method was used to conduct this research. It is used to describe and explain the illocutionary acts uttered by the main characters. The data were taken from the utterances of the main characters. Context of each utterance are determined to analyze the data. Context are provided to know whether they are fulfilled or not. Then the data were analyzed by using illocutionary acts categories proposed by Searle (1975), namely representative act, directive act, commisive act, expressive act and declaration act.
The result shows that most of the utterances of illocutionary acts uttered by the main characters in “Eat Pray Love” movie are affirming, asserting, boasting, suggesting, believe, informing, asking, entreating, advising, commanding, inviting, promising, praising, thanking, pardoning, declaring. The highest frequency illocutionary acts uttered by the main characters is directive. Commisives are seldom used in this movie because the speaker just focuses on facing and solving her problem.
Finally, the researcher suggests to the next researchers to analyze the speech act concerning with locutionary act, illocutionary act and perlocutionary act. Moreover, they can also analyze other objects which might contain five types illocutionary act.
