Politeness Strategies Used By Main Character (Eve) In "Red Rose For Love" Novel

People will choose appropriate or polite words to make interlocutor more comfortable when making conversation. In case of communication, the speaker will choose the strategies to have polite conversation. People use politeness strategies in order to make their conversation run well and do not make them embarrassed or uncomfortable. However, politeness strategies can also be appeared in literary works such as dialogues in a novel which provides the language of people interact each other within the novel. So, the researcher chooses politeness to describe politeness strategies which are used by the main character (Eve) in “Red Rose for Love” novel. In this study, the researcher analyzed the portrayed of utterances of the politeness strategies toward four politeness strategies, namely bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record strategies.
The descriptive qualitative method was used to conduct this research. The reason was to categorize and describe the politeness strategies which were used by the main character (Eve) in “Red Rose for Love” novel. In addition, this study presented the data in the forms of words or utterances rather than numbers. The result of the study showed that four strategies were applied by the main character (Eve) in her utterances. First, Bald on Record strategy was used by people who know each other very well. Second, Positive Politeness was used to express solidarity and minimize status difference. Third, Negative Politeness was also known as respect politeness, people used it to save other people’s face or not to make them embarrassed. Fourth, Off Record strategy, people would give statement to other people by giving clue or guidance or they are not directly addressing their wants. It is suggested that this study can become reference to the future researcher who conducts research with topic politeness strategies. The future researcher can conduct the research on politeness strategies in the other form of literary works such as drama, novel and movie to enrich the knowledge about politeness strategies.
