Improving Students Writing Ability Using Series Of Pictures

This research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) which aims at investigating how series of pictures can improve students’ writing ability. It was conducted to the students of SMP Jenderal Sudirman Kalipare Malang. The subject of the research is the second grade students in class VIII-B which consists of 35 students. The kind of text is recount text. To analyze the data, the researcher used descriptive quantitative to presents the result of the two cycles.
The findings showed that there is no significance difference between both correctors. In Cycle 1, mean of inter-rater of highest score was 83 and lowest score was 50. The result of average score was 69,171. It meant that the result did not fulfill categorize of criteria of success which should reach ≥75. The result of Cycle 2 showed that the result from mean of inter-rater was 77,86 that got from highest score was 90 and lowest score was 68. It can be concluded that mean of whole students of VIII-B was passed the test. Series of pictures as a media were effectively facilitated to help students’ interest and enthusiasm about English learning, especially in writing skill. The result of this research showed that pictures series as the media could improve the students’ writing skill. Series of pictures could be implemented effectively in teaching writing recount text by using these procedures: (1)Explaining what picture series implemented through writing process and its activities as clearly as possible; (2) Giving model before applying; (3) Explaining good prewriting technique; (4) Conduct revising and editing;(5) Choosing the picture series which in accordance with the topic, the students’ level and basic competence; and (6) Managing the class to make students more receptive and attractive (7) Publishing the result of writing. Finally, the use of series of pictures
as media teaching English writing Recount text offered an alternative way for the students in order to mastery English writing well.
Based on the conclusion, the researcher would like to offer some suggestion, they were; (1) The teachers are expected to pay more attention to the students’ problem. The role of the teacher is very important to provide a good teaching learning situation. (2) The students are expected to have more practice in writing. They are expected to follow the stages on the writing process including prewriting, writing,revising, and editing. (3) This research also can be used for further researcher to be the information to conduct other research dealing with the use of series of pictures using different skills or language component.
