Improving Students Writing Narrative Ability By Using Comic Strips At XI Grade At SMAN 1 Lawang In Academic Year 2013/2014
Writing is one of language skills that second language need to develop. Writing skill is not as simple as other language skill (listening skill, reading skill, and speaking skills). Writing skills involves grammar, vocabularies, and generating ideas. To get good score in writing, the students need some special media that can motivate and help students to be independent students. The researcher found that the students’ writing ability in narrative text was unsatisfactory. This study attempted to improve students’ ability in writing narrative by using comic strips.
The comic strips should be taught to eleventh grade students of senior high school. Simon (2012) writes that “with thought bubbles we can think, reflect, look back, imagine or visualize. Teaching writing narrative for senior high school is uneasy task. It requires a lot of creativity from the teacher. The Objective in doing this study is to know the improvement of writing narrative by using comic strips as a media.
The research design used by researcher in conducting the research in student of XII IPA 1 SMAN 1 Lawang was Class Action Research (CAR). The criterion of success of this research is if all the students in the class get score 78 as the minimum score. The researcher took the eleventh grade students at SMAN 1 Lawang as the subject of the study.
This research consists of 2 cycles. In cycle 1 only 13 students who passed the criteria of success from 32 students. It means that the researcher must continue to the next cycle. In cycle 2, all of the students in the science class were success to pass the criteria of success. Therefore, the cycle is stop and it is concluded that the comic strips really proves to work in improving the students’ writing narrative ability at XI grade of SMAN 1 Lawang.
The researcher considers the use of comic strips as an appropriate strategy to help develop the students ’ skills in producing good narrative texts . First of all, comic strips assist the students in generating ideas and retrieving words for their writing . The researcher also would like to give the suggestion, to the teachers. The English teacher could implement comic strips strategy to teach narrative writing. Also, for the students could make the comic strips as the way to learn writing narrative to practice and improve their writing ability. To the next researcher, comic strips strategy could be implemented to other language skill.
