Character And Characterization In J.M. Barrie’s “Peter Pan”

Literature is part of course and it has to be taken by student of English Department at Kanjuruhan University of Malang. The other subjects are drama, prose and poetry. Unfortunately most of the student do not like the subject, they think that literature is difficult to understand because to deals with creativity and imagination. Other student says literature is not necessary to learn. In other opinion, a fiction has nothing to do with real life that they ignore and cannot understand literature. In this skripsi, the reseacher wants to analyze the characteristic of major character in the novel “PETER PAN” by J.M. BARRIE. By analyzing the characteristic on the book the reseacher want to know deeply and really on the element.
The reasons why the reseacher decides to analyze the story of Peter Pan. The first reason is Peter Pan is a part of the classic story one of the literary work, second is purpose of studying the subject makes the students acquainted with the form of literature with the hope that will arouse the students’ interest and develop their understanding and appreciation of literary work.
The reseacher uses the structural theory to analyzed character and characterization of this novel. The reseacher also explain the definition of literature, literary genre which is contain of novel, the element of novel. Then, the reseacher explain about characteristic which is consist of kind of characterization. Then, character and characterization, moral development, moral issue, the summary of novel, and biography of the writer.
This study is designed to describe the character and characterizations of the "Peter Pan" by J.M Barrie. This study is descriptive qualitative research in which the reseacher using soft data such as novel, watching Peter Pan movie and also collected the data from browsing on Internet media. The object of the study is analysis of major characters of J.M Barrie “Peter Pan” which is taken this story for collecting the data. It is function is to help the writer in analyzing, classifying and identifying the kind of character and characterization in the novel.
The reseacher also tries to make her conclusion from the analysis written in chapter four, based on the problem of the study in chapter one. After the reseacher investigated the whole story, she is able to draw a conclusion, the main character in Peter Pan novel is Peter Pan himself, and Peter Pan has very stable character. Character is Peter Pan is a good boy, when he overcomes a series of unfortunates, and miserable of his life, but he still shows his good attitudes to everyone, that is always love to all. Peter Pan has a strong body. He can defeat Captain Hook when happened war in Neverland. But in the end there will be only Peter Pan and Captain Hook in the Neverland.
