Improving Students Reading Comprehension On Narative Text By Using Story Mapping For The Eight Grade At SMPN 2 Wagir Malang

Reading is an instrument that can facilitate students to enrich their knowledge. Reading is important not only because it can give a lot of information but also pleasure and joy. In junior high school level, students face some problems in reading. Most of students found difficulties in comprehending text, especially narrative text. Based on the researcher observation, the major problem faced by them is how to improve and comprehend the element of the story. To solve the problems, a story mapping strategy is proposed to be applied in teaching reading. The technique is chosen because it is simple and considered suitable for students in the junior high school. The students could be more easily to understand a text especially narrative text and to analyze the element of the story. So, the students assigned to make a story map based on the story given.
Classroom Action Research (CAR) is used in this study. The research is conducted in two cycles, each cycle covers planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The subjects were of the students of class VIII B of SMPN 2 Wagir Malang which consisted of 35 students. The data of the study were gathered using the following instruments: Observation, interview, test, documentation, and questionnaire.
The result of the research showed that the story mapping strategy effectively improved the students reading comprehension in understanding narrative text. The scores of the students in cycle II increased compared to the scores of the students in preliminary study and cycle I. the students percentage score had increased from 29% in the preliminary study, 71% in the first cycle and 91% in the second cycle.
Based on the result of this study, research concluded that using story mapping strategy could help students to improve reading comprehension in understanding narrative text. It is suggested for the English teachers apply the story mapping strategy to improve students reading comprehension in understanding narrative text and also for the further researchers are suggested For those who want to conduct research by using this strategy, the researcher hopes this research gives useful information.
