Increasing reading Comprehension By Using KWL (Know, Want, Learn) At Seven Grade Students In SMP Negeri 1 Wagir
Reading is one of many ways to open our mind and get knowledge, thus, it is very important for students in learning English. Reading is getting boring subject for students in seventh level in SMP Negeri 1 Wagir, it causes because the teacher did not apply appropriate technique in reading subject. So the researcher offers the three steps reading technique that foster active reading, those are KWL ( Know, Want, Learn). It is consider as a good way in teaching reading. Relating to the background above, the research problem that is how can KWL (Know, Want, Learn) increasing students’ reading comprehension at seventh grade students in SMP negeri 1 Wagir? Based on the statement of problem, so the purpose of the research is to know whether KWL (Know, Want, Learn) increase students’ reading comprehension.
In this research the ressearcher conducted classroom action research (CAR), there are some phases in research procedure namely : preliminary study, planning, action, observation, and reflection. There are some instruments were used in this research, such as test, observation checklist, and questionnaire. In the findings and discussions, the researcher conducted observation checklist to know class atmosphere and what problem faced by teacher in the class. Then, the researcher prepared lesson plan, criteria of success, media, that were used in teaching and learning process. There are two cycles in this research, each cycles consists of four meetings. As the result of the study, in the Cycle 1 the research was not succes yet, beacause only 10 students or 32,15% of students achieved the criteria of success. In the Cycle 2, 19 students was achieved the criteria f succes. It means that this method succesfully to increase the students reading comprehension. Furthermore, the researcher concludes that KWL technique in teaching learning process has a good impact on students at seventh grades in reading comprehension achievement. KWL elicit the students ability of reading text. KWL encourages the students to use their knowledge in filling the column. And the researcher suggests that the teacher have to use intructional media in teaching and
learning process because it help teacher to teach easly and the students can be interested in learning reading. And for students hopefully KWL technique is used as an alternative technique that can be applied in reading comprehension.
