Literature is part of course and it has to be taken by student of English Department at Kanjuruhan University of Malang. The other subjects are drama, prose and poetry. Unfortunately most of the student do not like the subject, they think that literature is difficult to understand because to deals with creativity and imagination. Other student says literature is not necessary to learn. In other opinion, a fiction has nothing to do with real life that they ignore and cannot understand literature.
In this thesis, the reseacher wants to analyze the characteristic of major character in the novel “SCARLET LETTER” by Nathaniel Hawthorne. By analyzing the characteristic on the book the reseacher want to know deeply and really on the element.
The reasons why the reseacher decides to analyze the story of Scarlet Letter. The first reason is Scarlet Letter is a part of the classic story one of the literary work, second is purpose of studying the subject makes the students acquainted with the form of literature with the hope that will arouse the students’ interest and develop their understanding and appreciation of literary work.
The reseacher uses the structural theory to human frailty and forbidden love of this novel. The reseacher also explain the definition of literature, literary genre which is contain of novel, the element of novel. Then, the reseacher explain about literature. Then, literature and sociology, novel, religion, human frailty,human weaknesses, forbidden love, and biography of the writer.
This study is designed to describe the human frailty and forbidden love of the "Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne. This study is descriptive qualitative research in which the reseacher using soft data such as novel, watching Scarlet Letter movie and also collected the data from browsing on Internet media.
he object of the study is analysis of major characters of Nathaniel Hawthorne “Scarlet Letter” which is taken this story for collecting the data. It is function is to help the writer in analyzing, classifying and identifying.
The reseacher also tries to make her conclusion from the analysis written in chapter four, based on the problem of the study in chapter one. After the reseacher investigated the whole story, she is able to draw a conclusion, the main character in Hester Prynne it can be found out that the human frailty impact to the religion, culture, customs, human rights, and morality that leads to adultery and forbidden love. In this novel, human frailty can be guidance to the people to the moral education and responsibility in the society. She is a sinner or adulterer who breaks the rule of religion, society and morality. She breaks the rule in the Puritan society that forbid to commit adultery, also the married woman forbidden to make affair with other man beside her husband. The rule of human life’s are arranged by religion, culture, traditions, and society value.
