An Analysis of Code Switching On Social Network "Facebook"

Social networking is a network of social interactions and personal relationship that helps us to communicate to each other easily. An example of social networking is Facebook, which has the largest member in the world. In Facebook, we usually find some people switch their language in a status. It is called code switching.
Code switching is situation where speakers deliberately change a code being used, namely by switching from to one to another (Jendra, 2010: 73). Code switching cannot be seen in spoken only, but also in written language. Many people use code switching in technology for communication.
The purpose of this research is supposed to know the types of code switching and the possible reasons of the Indonesian people switch their language in Facebook status. In this research, the writer used descriptive qualitative design. This research design is to describe code switching on social networking Facebook. In collecting data, the researcher used instrument: that were human as instrument. Human as instrument is the only one can understand about the real relation in this research field, collecting data and analyzing the data.
The results showed that, the researcher found three types of code switching which are used by the Indonesian people in their status Facebook. The users used emblematic code switching, inter-sentential code switching and intra-sentential code switching. The writer also found seven reasons of code switching which are used by Indonesian people in Facebook. They were talking about particular topic, quoting somebody else, being empathic about something, interjection, repetition used for clarification, repetition used for clarification and to soften or strengthen request or command.For the suggestions, the researcher suggests the future researchers who are interested in analyzing code switching to continue this research in more detail and develop this research by including all the aspects in code switching. Besides that, they can also analyze code switching not only in Facebook, but also in other materials such as in novel, movie, so on, in order to have more knowledge about code switching.
