The Analysis Of Formal Link In Written In The Stars Novel By Jaclyn Reding

English is one of the important languages in the globalization era like now. As we know there are many entertainments or news written that presented in English, but sometimes we cannot enjoy it because we do not know how to translate it well. So, in this study the researcher tries a new way in learning English, especially in understanding the meaning of words or utterances or sentences by analyzing and describing the formal links used in the novel “Written in the Stars”. By analizing the used of formal link is to help the readers to get the true meaning by involving to the story. Meanwhile, by analyzing the formal link in the novel it is another way for the students to get additional kowledge outside the teaching and learning process in diferrent situation and fun.
This study uses descriptive qualitative research in which the researcher just describe and the data cannot be treated with statistical procedures because it is obtained from articles, literary works, field notes, and others resources where the data are taken and collected. The object of this study is formal links and the subject is “Written in the Stars” novel which consist of nine chapters. The instruments used in this study are documentation and observation. The data is collected from every document which is relevant with the object in the form of books, thesis, and internet
The analysis of data includes studying and reading the theory, comprehending the data, and then analyzing the novel. The analysis is taken from ten chapters of “Written in the Stars” novel. From the whole data the researcher found that most of chapters consist of more than one formal link. The formal links are; Verb Form, Parallelism, Repetition, Referring expression, Ellipsis, and Conjunction. From those formal links the most used in the novel is Parallelism, it can be seen that parallelism dominate the others links in eight chapters from nine chapters. Besides parallelism dominate in eight chapters, from the amount of each formal links used in all chapters parallelism is the biggest number than the others formal links. From the definition above, it can be concluded that the “Written in stars” novel has deep meaning which always giving a good
choices of word and have a powerful emotional effect. So the readers can involve to the characters feeling in the novel. In this novel the author tries to avoid using the same word by using the other diction of word, clause, or phrase that has the same meaning as previously.For the suggestion, the researcher recommends to the next researchers to analyze another part of discourse analysis such as discourse structure, discourse as dialogue, knowledge on discourse, et cetera.
