Improving The Students’ Speaking Ability By Using Realia In The Seven Grade At MTs. Mamba’ul Huda Banjarsari-Ngajum
Speaking ability is a part of the goal or skill in learning English in the curriculum besides writing, reading, and listening. Some people including language learners think that speaking is difficult. However, some language learners are not interested in speaking lesson. One of the reasons is the teacher doesn’t give them an interesting activity. To make them interested and easy to understand, the teacher should give them interesting activities. When they practice it in real situation, it means that they don’t need to imagine, they can see, hear, feel the situation directly. Thus, in this research, the researcher used realia to improve students’ speaking ability, because realia is real object that can be used as a media in teaching learning process.
The objectives of this research were to describe the implementation of realia to improve students’ speaking ability and to identify the improvement of the students’ speaking ability. The subjects of this research were the seven grade students of MTs.Mamba’ul Huda Banjarsari-Ngajum in the academic year of 2013/2014. The number of the subjects was 23 students. This research was a classroom action research. The process of this research was conducted in two stages, including cycle 1 and cycle 2. The data were collected by using observation cheklist in order to know the events in the classroom during teaching learning process. Besides, she also used test to get the students’ score, in order to know the improvement of students’ ability in speaking from their score. The data were analyzed by using quantitative analysis.
In this research, the researcher used kinds of realia. In the first cycle, the researcher used bag and family photo. Then, in cycle two the researcher used book, window and door. The result of research shows that realia used in teaching speaking with the seven grade students of MTs Mamba’ul Huda Banjarsari-Ngajum in The Academic
Year of 2013/2014 can improve students’ speaking ability.The implementation of realia as media was successfull since the criterion of success was achieved. The first criterion was 100% students could pass the target score more than 75 based on the KKM. The finding in cycle 1 had the mean score 71,31, it did not reach the minimal mastery criterion(KKM). Because of that the cycle was continued to cycle 2. In cycle 2 the score was enhance, the mean score in cycle 2 was 84,05.
Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that by using realia in teaching speaking,teacher can improve students’ ability in speaking. And it is hoped that it can be valuable as theinformation resource for students, teachers, and the researcher herself.
