Improving Speaking Skill By Using Short Dialogues To The Students’at The First Grade Of SMP Negeri 4 Lawang
This thesis is aimed at implementation of short dialogues in teaching speaking to improve the students’ speaking skill at the first grade of SMP Negeri 4 Lawang. The subject of the study is the first grade students, it is done for the reason that the basic knowledge of the language should be given in the earlier level of learning. In collecting the data, the researcher focuses on speaking proficiency, teaching speaking, problem in teaching speaking, the activities to promote speaking skills, characteristics of successful speaking activities, method and technique of teaching speaking, and dialogue technique.
Research method is a way employed by the researcher to collect and analyze the data in order to solve the problem. The research design of this study is Classroom Action Research (CAR). Classroom Action Research for English Learning Aims at developing a certain instructional strategy to solve practical instructional problems in English classrooms. Classroom Action Research is done in several cycles each of which is repeated in the following cycle if the result is not satisfactory yet with the better revised lesson plan. Each cycle begins with lesson planning, implementing the plan (acting), observing the implementation, and reflecting or evaluating the process and the result of the implementation. The process of the study consists of some steps from preliminary study, planning, implementing, observing, data analysis and reflecting. Each cycle was conducted in three meetings, and the researcher used two cycles because the criteria of success were not achieved in cycle 1.
The result of cycle 1 showed that the average students’ speaking proficiency was 60.01. Based on the score identification, this average score was categorized in fair level. After conducting second cycle, the researcher found that the research was success so there would be no cycle anymore because it has fulfill the criteria of success which all students’ speaking proficiency score is 78.32. the result of the test increase 18.31. point from cycle 1. Short dialogues as easy media for the students’ in speaking ability because the dialogue is easy to get and use. It improved the motivation, memorizing and imagination of the students. So, it is easy for them to express what their ideas
through the dialogue as a media in speaking.
