Improving Students’ Reading Comprehension Byusing Jigsaw Technique In Narrative Text At The Eighth Grade Of SMP Negeri 12 Malang
The research design employed in this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR). The classroom Action Research design was collaborative with one of the English teachers of SMPN 12 Malang. The class consists of 35 students of as a sample because of some reasons. First, the researcher was planned at the same time when the English Teacher is getting the problem. Second, the researcher found the students need to change their way in reading comprehension. Third, the result of the preliminary study showed that the students have serious problem in reading activities.
To collect the necessary data, the researcher developed some instruments: observation sheet, interview, questionnaire, and test. Then for the design of Classroom Action Research itself of some steps from a preliminary study, planning, implementation, observing, analyzing to reflecting. The data findings for preliminary study showed that the Jigsaw method is something new for them, and they got difficult in implementation. But for Cycle 1 showed that Jigsaw technique got improvement even though not significant. Students’ average score was 68.42 into 80 was success. Even though the score can not determine totally success because of the criteria of success if 70% students could achieve the average 80 in the class. Besides the minimum standard score of English subject is 75. The failure itself was caused by some reasons, such as the
students felt difficult about Jigsaw and the procedure or instruction of used Jigsaw made them difficult to do the task. That strategy would be give them benefit because
if they worked together with smart students, their score would be get good score with the help from the smart students how to comprehend of reading.
Then the last average was 89.21 in Cycle 2. Cycle 2 was a continuation from cycle 1. The researcher hold Cycle 2 because of in the Cycle 1, there were 12 students failed to get 75 as a standard minimum score. Based on the result, the researcher needs to revise plan and did Cycle 2 to improve their score including their motivation in reading comprehension through jigsaw technique. In the Cycle 2, there were 6 students still failed; those 6 students were boys who often made a noise in classroom. Their motivation in learning especially in reading was low.
There was decrease of students who failed, from 33 into 6 students; their change was significant. Therefore the conclusion in Cycle 2 is the research was successful. Thus, it could be concluded that the method was successful in this study. Then the suggestion for teachers: it is better to choose and use the variety technique in teaching in the class, make a good situation in the class in order the class become conducive and has to be brave to try a new technique for their student
